The 10th-anniversary edition of the biggest rock festival in Bulgaria took place on June 27-28th 2015. The two-day festival was headlined by Twisted Sister and Within Temptation.
Twisted Sister made their first festival appearance in Bulgaria at the very first Kavarna Rock Festival back in 2006 - the event that shaped Kavarna as the rock capital of Bulgaria. So it was only fitting to celebrate the festival's anniversary with them headlining again 10 years later. Thousands sang along with Dee Snider on "We're not gonna take it" and "I Wanna Rock" giving it everything since the band has not had any major appearances in the country since 2006.
Within Temptation visited Bulgaria as part of their Hydra World Tour and captured the audience with a huge video wall spanning the whole stage. In 2014 the band won the Best Live Band award at the Metal Hammer Awards and the band's lead singer, Sharon den Adel has won the Rock Goddess of the Year award at the Loudwire Music Awards twice - in 2011 and again in 2014.
Co-headliners for Kavarna Rock Festival 2015 were Unisonic and Hammerfall – power metal veterans from Sweden founded in 1993 by Oscar Dronjak. Unisonic is a German hard rock/power metal supergroup founded in 2009 by former Helloween lead singer Michael Kiske, along with Dennis Ward, Kosta Zafiriou from Pink Cream 69, Mandy Meyer (formerly in Gotthard and Asia) and "the godfather of power metal" Kai Hansen from Helloween. Their appearance on this year's festival was Unisonic's first visit to Bulgaria.
We had the pleasure to see for the first time in Bulgaria special appearances by Candlemass and UFO - the English hard rock/heavy metal sensation created by lead singer Phil Mogg, guitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way and drummer Andy Parker back in 1969. The group won international acclaim in 1973 when they recruited then 18-year-old Michael Schenker from Scorpions. UFO performed at the festival as Phil Mogg, Andy Parker on drums, Paul Raymond on rhythm guitars and keyboards and Vinnie Moore on lead guitars.
Candlemass, another band of this year's line up is considered as the most influential Swedish doom metal band. Established in Stockholm in 1984 by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling and drummer Matz Ekström. In January 2013, Candlemass was voted the greatest Swedish hard rock/metal band of all time by the writers of Sweden Rock Magazine - Scandinavia's biggest hard rock magazine.
Dutch symphonic metal's Delain also took part in Kavarna Rock 2015. Created In 2002 by former Within Temptation keyboard player Martijn Westerholt, they have worked with multitude of musicians while creating their signature style - from Marco Hietala from Nightwish, to Liv Kristine and Ad Sluijter from Leave's Eyes and Epica.
To respond to the huge interest towards Jägermeister Battle of the Bands contest from last year, we've decided to host the competition again this year, bigger and louder with a diverse line-up of international young bands competing on the first day of the festival on June 26th.
